(Note - this review is MY review and is NOT to be used as the sole basis for your
decision as to whether or not to purchase this fact-filled work. Also... my tone
to review it is the same one I use to do my site, some humor with the direction to inform)
Finished reading in the wee of very next morning it arrived, I must say I am impressed.
As some were truly disappointed by the first biography wanna-be, you won't
be on this one. Micah did THOROUGH research of SHAGGY's name, military life
and, most importantly, the music. Then again, some of you may be disappointed.
Those of you looking for personal statements to the author and personal Orville/SHAGGY
in-depthness, sorry, you won't get it. This book deals with the MUSIC! Therefore you
need to also keep in mind this is a BIOgraphy, not an AUTO-BIOgraphy. And I review.....
I received a manuscript, vs. an actual book version, which is what the printer
will receive to put it to print. It arrived to a very sleepy ladeeee at 10:30 AM
on Sept. 26, '02. I had been anticipating the arrival since first notification
of it's existance on Aug. 13 from Erin of ECW Press. It is 185 pages but some
are blank and it includes table of contents, notes (references used), and the pages
most books contain. No photos are in it and this was probably a good thing knowing
they would have been distractions, if you all know me. ;) The first few chapters of the book
go way before SHAGGY was born, much less his entrance into music. They give
detail to where Carribean MUSIC originated and how. It gives a DEEP look into
reggae, ragga, dancehall, roots and all Carribean music and how it affects hip-hop,
rap, etc. This gives you an understanding of why SHAGGY is where he is today
and how. I enjoyed learning this facet of the book moreso than the rest of it.
I will go in to detail why next.
Then in the rest of the book incorporates SHAGGY's beginings speaking to classmates,
Marine peeps and music industry folks too. Loads of quotes from various net, print,
TV, radio, and actual people are credited (people could sue you if you don't do that)
and used to give more detail. Personally, there was not much in those chapters that
was new for me being the rigourous researcher I have been in almost 2 years of being
on the scene as a site owner on SHAGGY's music alone. I did find a few things I had not
read before such as Pablo's actual statements about the 'It Wasn't Me' ordeal. This will
be a bonus for some as I don't recall seeing him speak that much ANYWHERE on the net,
Ever! (The 'IWM" napster downloading DJ in Hawaii in case anyone for got). Some more
small things but all-in-all some of it was the same, maybe worded a tad differently.
The book's time span comes RIGHT up to late August, yes this year.
On the whole, like I stated, it is a well researched book with great intention hence
the overload of references from things I'd already seen. This bio is more musical
than say JUST SHAGGY as the other one was. It is written with loads of depth
and concentrated effort to give the reader a strong knowledge on how
and SHAGGY is SHAGGY. Should you buy it? No one can spend your money
but you. Would I buy it, yes, personally I would because I like reading anything
dealing with music. Is it a collector's item? I think so because it encompasses loads
of information on all levels. What age do you reccomend for it? Well, I am not going
to say someone 17 or 52 is not going to enjoy it. I will just say it is DEEP. And sometimes
no matter the age, some of us can't delve that far IF we are looking for something else.
In other words, anyone who wants it to be a SHAGGY tell all book should not buy it.
I don't beleive it will house as many photos as the last book did. But, this is not a minus
nor plus to not acquire the book if you really want it. So there you have it. Have questions
about the book and/or any details I did not cover, please ask. I will answer them
the best I can. Use 'Slips' below or my guestbook to contact me.
Micah, I am looking forward to your added work to compliment this book on who you
are. I hope you've added your 'why I wrote this book' to give the readers some insight
on the direction YOU, the author and the knowledge base, want(ed) this to go in.
My personal thanks to Erin MacCleod of ECW Press for the initial contact all over
the net to let the Studio be first in it's acquisition. Her patience, willingness to assist me
and professionalism is TOPS! Emma, also of ECW Press, for her patience as well.
I truly thank Micah Locilento for even bringing the brainchild to print.
And lastly we all thank SHAGGY for his existance for all of us to have found one another.
We did not JUST learn the music we learned a culture, a way of life.
