Micah Is Moved
Author & Researcher Of 'SHAGGY: Dog-A-Muffin Style'
In His Own Words Aug. 21 & Oct. 11, '02

"The short story is that I am a HUGE reggae fan/supporter and club DJ
and I'm very disappointed in how little coverage and air-play reggae gets
on the radio, on video stations, and in clubs throughout North America (in Montreal,
for example, there are only 2 bars/clubs that play reggae music more than once a week!).
Amazingly, Shaggy has managed to turn out hit after hit over a ten year period--in spite
of the fact that he belongs to this reggae ghetto. As a result, Shaggy offers a unique
opportunity to introduce a huge number of Shaggy fans to the wider world of reggae
(something that Shaggy has repeatedly done in interviews and at stage shows).
In spite of the fact that I wasn't able to get the interviews that I wanted, I proceeded with
the book because I think Shaggy offers a unique opportunity to spread the word about reggae.
This is why I chose to include the (rather long) history of sound systems and deejaying.
While you can now tune in to top-40 radio and hear the likes of Bounty Killer and Beenie,
Man, there still seems to be a general ignorance regarding where these performers
come from and the tradition in which they're working. Hopefully this book will help
to fill in some of the gaps for people who've been exposed to reggae through the likes
of Shaggy but don't quite know where to find more of this great music....
Seeing as Shaggy has always taken it upon himself to promote reggae
wherever and whenever possible, I think it works out rather well.
Dave Brown has been a big help where this project is concerned, sending me tapes
from NY area sound systems (like Downbeat, African Love, King Moke, etc.), interviews
with Shaggy, taped performances, etc. I don't think I've come across a bigger supporter
of JA music and culture in my life. Thanks to the help of people like him
(in addition to long-time Toronto reggae journalists Dave Kingston and Beth Lesser,
Roger Steffens, Steve Barrow, etc.) I think I've been able to provide a lot
of (mostly reggae related) info that even the most dedicated Shaggy fans might not know.
Anyway, I'm very excited about the book and very happy that Shaggy fans share my enthusiasm."
Di adds: "Micah... supporters are eagerly awaiting it's arrival. As said, the last
biography left us disappointed to a degree. I am pleased so far with the layout,
the direction and the purpose. Maybe not actually conversing with SHAGGY
is a blessing in disguise. History might have been missed trying to encompass
the MAN and not the music. As we've seen in interviews from back when
till now, loads of people play on the embodiment of the image and not
the real MASTER of his music.
Thank you for hours upon hours of research to bring it all together.
Once again, we are pleased that SHAGGY's Studio.com Supporters
and myself were allowed to get a 'Sneak Peek' ;)"
